To help our students understand their earning potential and the often hard to conceptualise “invisible” money system, we are creating a program where students participating in work skills receive an income for their work. This income will be banked in the HALINDA BANK.
halinda school bank logo.pngTeachers decide what qualifies for “work” and the payment issued for particular work skills. The work skills programs may include some of the examples below.

To keep track of students “income” or earnings an excel spread sheet will act as “online banking” where students enter their income weekly. Each student will be issued with a bank card and pin to access this spreadsheet. The bank card and pin will be used to make purchases at the end of term reward shop. Alternatively students will be given opportunities to withdraw money from their account for various in school rewards.

At the end of each term a shop will be set up where students can make a purchase from a selection of items realistically priced. To make this purchase they will need to use their bank card and pin. They will be issued with a receipt to record their purchase. This amount then needs to be recorded on the spread sheet or “internet banking” system set up.
Teachers may also offer opportunities in the room to withdraw from student accounts. For example, during cooking sessions teachers may cook something additional for students to purchase if they choose. Additionally when Skill Set Café has left over meals they will be offered to students to purchase with their earnings. Photos have been taken of the items available for purchase to motivate students and keep them on target till the end of term. Gifts available in the shop have all been donated. Please note this is only one financial literacy program offered to our students. Other programs and opportunities focus on understanding the use of "real" money in the real world.
